Butterfly Dream - 2022

Analog Photography

This concept takes inspiration from the film A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence, a work that deeply resonated with me and prompted a profound reconsideration of my own existence, particularly during the recent pandemic. The film's exploration of reality and illusion made me reflect on how we navigate between the waking world and the dream world. At times, especially during these uncertain moments, I find myself waking up unsure whether I am still dreaming or if I have entered reality. This experience became the catalyst for exploring the blurred lines between these realms—between dreams and reality, between the virtual and the real.

For this exploration, I chose lens as a medium to express my ideas, using it as both a visual and symbolic outlet. The phrase “I'm trapped in a butterfly dream” represents the delicate space between the dream state and our conscious selves. The dream, like a butterfly, flutters between consciousness and subconsciousness, elusive yet persistent. To visualize this concept, I designed blocky shapes that sit atop the head, mimicking a puzzle-like structure. These intricate, complicated joins reflect the fragmented nature of dreams—the way pieces of our subconscious come together to form a reality that feels genuine while we are immersed in it.

The design, though complex, is intentionally ambiguous, just as dreams feel tangible and real in the moment. But once we awaken, the clarity fades, and we are left questioning what was real and what was imagined. The intricate puzzle-like elements represent the way our minds construct dreams, weaving together a seemingly coherent reality. Through this work, I want to convey that while we are in a dream, it often feels just as real as the world we know, only to slip away once the boundary between the two worlds is crossed.

This project aims to delve into the surreal space between dreams and reality, where perception becomes distorted, and our understanding of existence is constantly in flux. It’s a reflection on how we exist within both worlds at once, trapped in the liminal space where consciousness and subconsciousness meet, constantly shifting between what's real and what's imagined.
