Sculptural Sensuality - 2022

Analog Photography

This Look Book showcases the MA design work of Filipino designer Jessan Macatangay, exploring the sensual impact of restrictive forms. The collection delves into the complex relationship between structure and the senses, using sculptural elements to convey the tension between personal expression and cultural constraint. These designs serve as a metaphor for the limitations imposed by Catholic church spaces and cultural traditions, reflecting how such forces influence the lives and identities of Filipino women.

The architectural restrictions in the collection echo the confines of the religious and cultural spaces that shape and sometimes constrain feminine expression in the Philippines. Each garment is a statement of both oppression and liberation, using carefully constructed shapes and forms to explore the boundaries between the physical and the emotional, the material and the spiritual. The interplay of structured, sculptural elements invites a deeper reflection on the role of cultural heritage in shaping the female experience.

In the designs, sensuality emerges through the manipulation of materials and forms, juxtaposing the rigid structure with delicate, fluid lines that suggest the movement and complexity of the human body. Through these contrasts, Macatangay’s work challenges the viewer to reconsider the balance between restriction and freedom, tradition and self-expression, within the context of a culture shaped by both religion and history.

Sculptural Sensuality is not just a fashion statement—it is an exploration of how identity, culture, and religion intertwine to form the narrative of Filipino women. It is a powerful commentary on the push and pull between cultural expectations and personal liberation.
