Han Yang is a London-based visual artist, photographer, and creative director, renowned for her distinctive approach to blending abstract and surreal elements to explore the intricacies of human psychology, gender, femininity, and the intersections of technology. Her art draws heavily from oriental metaphors, creating deeply emotional and visually compelling works. From 2021 to 2024, Han was studying for a PhD in Digital Humanities at King's College London, focusing on the intersection of gender, technology, and the digital body in contemporary art. Despite the challenges of the academic journey, she made significant contributions to the field, participating in international research conferences such as AI Culture: Large Language Models and the Humanities and Digital Futures: Memes & Methods Workshop, while continuing to develop her artistic practice. Han graduated with distinction from MA Fashion Photography at University of the Arts London in 2019. Her creative journey has since earned her numerous accolades, including the Women’s Emerging Artist Award, SONY Young Photographer Award, and the Nikon Cup. Continuously pushing artistic boundaries, Han's work resonates with audiences worldwide, establishing her as a prominent figure in contemporary art and photography.
Influenced by her Chinese heritage, she draws upon the ancient principles of Yin and Yang, using circles to express the fluidity of motion and continual change while squares represent the stability of a grounding force. Han’s artwork are visceral in their minimalist style, playful, highly sensory, and nuanced. Through her camera lens, she explores the worlds inside us with a romantic perspective, producing imagery that is vividly colourful and buoyantly light even when the subject matter feels heavy. Han’s work has been widely recognized in the art world, with exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Christie’s Gallery, Zebra One Gallery, and Tones Gallery, as well as inclusion in international festivals and publications. Some of her notable exhibitions include “Vulnerability”, awarded the Eve Arnold Photography First Prize at the 7th Annual Women’s Emerging Artist Award and showcased at the FotoSlovo Gallery. Her work has also been featured in magazines like Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair UK, and Harper's Bazaar, further cementing her place in the global art scene. Throughout her career, Han has earned numerous accolades, including the Women’s Emerging Artist Award, SONY Young Photographer Award, and the Nikon Cup.
Han’s creative practice spans both fine art and fashion photography. She is known for her ability to capture the human form and convey complex narratives through minimalist yet powerful visuals. Her work often engages with themes of vulnerability, identity, and the body, as seen in series such as The Invisible Project and Fetish Animals, which explore the tension between the human body and contemporary societal forces. In addition to her photographic work, Han’s creative vision extends to the role of a director and collaborator. She has worked with a diverse range of clients and institutions, from Barbagelata Contemporary Art to Al-Tiba9 Contemporary Art, and has contributed to multiple collaborative projects with artists and designers across the fashion and fine art industries.
Her current focus is on projects that challenge gender norms, exploring queer identities and the intersections of body, identity, and transformation. Han’s recent works include a project on queer bodies exploring themes of rebirth, fluidity, and liberation, symbolized through the butterfly as a motif of self-expression. She is also actively engaged in long-term artistic research, including collaborations with marginalized communities and underrepresented groups in the creative industry. Han’s work is not only an exploration of personal identity but a broader commentary on contemporary society, examining how the body, gender, and technology interact in an increasingly digital world. Her commitment to challenging the status quo and creating space for diverse voices within the art world continues to shape her ongoing projects and exhibitions.
