Vulnerability - 2020

Analog Photography

This work is based on the research of human vulnerability. The term "vulnerability" comes from the Latin word meaning "something that causes harm." In philosophical terminology, it refers to the inherent condition of human existence, manifested in its limitations and fragility, which can never be completely overcome or eliminated. Certain groups are considered more exposed, lacking the ability to defend against abuse and suffering. As Judith Butler writes, "The body signifies death, vulnerability, agency: the skin and flesh expose us to the gaze of others and to touch and violence."

In this photoshoot, the concept of vulnerability is used as an inspirational tool, combined with the environmental philosophy of the Heart Sutra in Buddhism, to explore the relationship between humans and non-human environments. In this project, elements such as the "Heart Sutra" on the model’s body and face, broken eggs (symbolizing the natural environment), the subjectivity and indirectness of the body, and the connection between the body and the world, all together represent the themes of the project.

Through these visual elements, the work aims to express human vulnerability and its manifestation in the environment, while also reflecting the profound connection between humans and nature. The "Heart Sutra" text on the model symbolizes the exploration of both the inner self and the outer world, while the broken eggs symbolize the fragility of life and the vulnerability of the natural environment. The physical expression of the body reveals both the fragility and resilience of humans when facing the outside world. In this way, the work invites the viewer to reflect on the deeper meaning of human vulnerability and our complex relationship with the world around us.
