Human Body - 2023

Analog Photography

This photographic project is inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic work, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, and merges symbolic imagery of food ("sushi salmon") and the female "womb." The flowing waves and deep blue ocean colors not only symbolize the struggle and relentless pursuit of human existence but also profoundly convey the reverence and worship of natural forces within Asian culture. From a distance, the human body, curled into a compact form, resembles both rice balls and sushi, as well as tightly clenched fists—metaphors for the strength and resilience of life.

In the piece, the red and yellow body paint not only points to food and sex as the foundation of human survival but also reflects the position and identity of women within Asian culture. In traditional culture, women are often objectified as "pleasing to the eye or delicious," a label that not only confines their external beauty but also deeply influences their social roles and self-perception. By using the bodies of Asian women as a canvas, the work presents their effort to break free from this objectifying label. This effort is not only a redefinition of their identity but also a steadfast and resilient resistance to fate.

From a technical perspective, the entire work is created using long exposure combined with light painting techniques. Through hand-developed and scanned enlargements of film, the work has a strong sense of historical depth, giving the image a unique texture and profound meaning. The use of traditional photographic techniques is not only a tribute to historical craftsmanship but also an exploration of combining modern technology with ancient artistry.

Through a multilayered interpretation of nature, humanity, and female identity, the work evokes deep reflections on life and existence. In a modern context, it recaptures the essence of traditional culture, exploring the intrinsic connection between female strength and the resilience of life, offering the viewer a new visual and intellectual experience. From the perspectives of cultural studies and feminist theory, the piece embodies a deep concern and reflection on female subjectivity. Through cross-cultural artistic language, it not only presents the struggles and efforts of women throughout history but also reflects contemporary society's ongoing focus and discussion on gender equality and cultural inheritance.
