Sugar I_Lesbian bars - 2017

Digital Photography

This project delves into the emotions and human nature within the lesbian community, using the powerful medium of photography to capture a broad spectrum of feelings, from sweetness, warmth, and love, to sadness, loneliness, and frustration. When I first entered this new environment, I was greeted by a world vastly different from my own—a world full of curiosity and fresh perspectives. The bar, a space where people from all walks of life come together, became my focal point for exploring these emotions.

During my time there, I met my first lesbian couple, and their words stayed with me: they wished for me to help spread positive energy about the community through my project. This conversation sparked my desire to document their stories and, through this, capture a deeper connection to the people within this space.

In Greek, photography means "painting with light." The lighting in the bar, vibrant and ever-changing, allowed my imagination to flow freely. Glorious colors and lighting became the driving force behind this series, as I photographed the women surrounding me—each unique, yet all connected by their experiences. The atmosphere, shaped by the interplay of light, color, and emotion, became a vital part of the project. I wanted my images to not only capture outer appearances but also convey the emotional depth of the individuals I was photographing.

One key element of this project was the exploration of the uncertainty that comes with love and relationships within the lesbian community. A specific moment that stood out was when I photographed the couple who ran the bar. Their relationship, full of love, was fraught with conflicts and insecurities, particularly around another woman. This uncertainty was not just about personal dynamics but also reflected the broader societal challenges that exist for the lesbian community. This moment illustrated the complexities and emotional tensions that are often overlooked in conversations about love and identity.

In creating this body of work, I was continuously searching for patterns and commonalities within the community. I encountered diverse stories that at times left me confused, questioning how to fully understand the nuances of human nature. But in this process, I realized that these contradictions—between public face and private pain, joy and struggle—are what make the lesbian community so rich and multi-layered. The project thus became a reflection of both the individual and the collective, showing how the world influences the inner workings of the human spirit and how, in turn, personal emotions can reveal universal truths about love, vulnerability, and identity.
