This is an age of rapid change. When I was little, there were tile-roofed houses outside of my window. I heard birds chirping in the morning and I saw smoke curling up from kitchen chimneys in the afternoon. Nowadays, outside are the sound of construction, the busy traffic flow and high buildings rising up. Shenzhen is an ever-bright city and a representative metropolitan of China. Many young men like me, came here to chase their dream.
Faced with changes, people often feel that life is a dream in which they experience lost, confusion, sadness and frustration but also pleasure, joy, courage, firmness and hope. It is natural to be pessimistic when we have to meet passive choices such as the change of social environment and the passing away of relatives. Like the disappearing train station, many changes cannot be controlled by ourselves. However, there are some changes that can be achieved actively. For example: what kind of career and life do we want?
The development of city brings change on the family structure gradually and we are part of it. We are too busy to stay at home for long. We have the freedom to pursue the material and spirit goals in our understanding. The once important family-based mode of life is also changing. However, mother as the most important family member, is a special case because her significance is not affected regardless of the change of the outside word.
In this project, I tried to make space and light as key points. The shift of space from the outdoor to indoor indicates the external-to-internal self-reflection. Lights change over time and every image presents the situation and story of each time point like morning, afternoon, twilight and night.
In this series of pictures, the content determined photographic methods and means. For example, I wish to deliver the message that mother is the most important member of a family. No matter how much the world changes, she is always the pillar of spirit and strength in my heart. Therefore, I used slow shutter and multiple exposure to match with the theme and content.
