Curatorial Statement

Photography World is a professional photography magazine with a lineage stretching back more than four decades. Originally founded as an internal technical bulletin of China’s national news agency, the magazine has evolved into a refined and elegant publication committed to exploring global photographic culture. Through the lens of light and shadow, it portrays the vastness of human experience and the complexity of our inner worlds.

Over its 500+ monthly issues, Photography World has published tens of thousands of images. For this exhibition, we have selected a handful of works to share. The word "photo" comes from the Greek for “light.” Light is what allows photography to exist; light creates the image, and light reveals colors. Illuminating both the world around us and the lives within us, light guides the photographer’s eye to capture fleeting moments that become visual narratives.

These images are like white light refracted through a prism—colorful, multifaceted, each with its own tone and story. From vintage wet plate portraits to grayscale landscapes, from fleeting travel glimpses to urban scenes, from rural shepherds to surreal studio collages, and even cutting-edge AI-generated visuals—this small exhibition cannot encapsulate the entirety of Photography World or photography history. Instead, it offers a starting point for curious viewers to step into the world of photography and discover the unique perspective we’ve always strived to present.
