Inspired by Francisco de Zurbarán’s Agnus Dei, this project delves into the complex notion of the scapegoat and the mechanisms that sustain it within society. The concept explores how, in order to protect the interests of the whole society and maintain social stability, individuals or minority groups are sacrificed, their suffering becoming a means of preserving the greater good. This sacrifice serves to reinforce societal power structures, but at a moral cost—one that is often hidden behind the veil of collective order. Through this project, we seek to examine the deeper, often uncomfortable questions surrounding power, sacrifice, and the moral implications of social structures.
The visual style of the project challenges traditional aesthetics, embracing a quirky, dark, and rebellious fashion approach that reflects the pain and isolation faced by those who are sacrificed for the so-called "greater good." The man-eating flowers and crows featured throughout the work act as powerful symbols of greed, bullying, and the darkness that permeates societal structures. The man-eating flower represents the consuming nature of power, while the crow stands for injustice, the silent witness to the suffering of the scapegoat.
In this project, the models themselves become the scapegoats—their clothing, makeup, and expressions conveying the internal struggle and resistance of those forced into these roles. The garments, with their chaotic textures and forms, reflect the psychological weight of being made to carry the blame for societal ills, while the makeup and expressions emphasize the isolation and pain of being cast aside for the supposed benefit of others.
This visual narrative weaves a complex, thought-provoking story that exists at the intersection of fashion and art, inviting the viewer to reflect on themes of inequality, moral compromise, and the scapegoating process in modern society. Through this work, we hope that the audience not only appreciates the aesthetic rebellion of the fashion but also engages with the deeper, more disturbing truths that the fashion and art worlds often try to conceal. The fashion in this piece serves not only as a form of expression but as a commentary on the power dynamics that shape society and the lives of those forced into the margins.
