Fetish animals - 2023

Analog Photography

The project Fetish Animals explores the intersection of innocence, sensuality, and the complex dynamics of power through a range of symbolic elements that evoke deep psychological responses. The work revolves around the idea of animals, specifically "lovely animals," that carry a culturally ingrained notion of tenderness, care, and motherhood. These animals often symbolize our nurturing instincts, representing a unique, almost proprietary desire to protect, care for, and cherish them. The project unpacks these emotions through an unsettling yet compelling visual language that critiques this very impulse while also examining the physicality of "cuteness" and its inherent power dynamics.

At the heart of Fetish Animals is the contrast between the deep, rich green background and the bird with outstretched wings, blocking the model’s face. The bird serves as a symbol of freedom, yet its role in obstructing the face introduces a sense of mystery and constraint, subtly evoking themes of control and subjugation. The bird’s position, though beautiful and majestic, becomes an agent of concealment—suggesting that beneath the surface of tenderness, there is a deeper, more complex emotional landscape. This tension between freedom and restriction hints at the darker, more possessive desires that lurk beneath the desire to protect and nurture.

The image of the model interacting with the hybrid creature—a doll-like figure with a human head and sheep’s body—further underscores the complex fusion of vulnerability and desire. This creature, caught between human and animal realms, embodies the notion of fetishization and infantilization, revealing how these beings are often reduced to objects of affection that are meant to be controlled or protected. The hybrid form, with its ambiguity and unsettling nature, challenges our perception of the animal-human relationship and questions the boundaries of power, care, and dependence. The playfulness of the doll, paired with its strange, fragmented identity, speaks to the way we often project our desires onto beings that are simultaneously submissive and innocent.

The concept of the "wrapped" body in the work enhances the idea of entrapment and suffocation, where the softness of the materials stands in stark contrast to the constraint imposed by their presence. This wrapping creates a paradox of safety and limitation, where the softness of the body is enveloped and controlled, yet there remains an undeniable sensuality in the interaction. The gentle, feminine qualities of the model—her tenderness and grace—are amplified by the contrast between the softness of the animal imagery and the suffocating embrace of the wrapping, creating a sense of vulnerability that is both alluring and disconcerting.

The project, in its entirety, critiques the aestheticization of "cute" animals and the commodification of vulnerability. The softness, malleability, and tactile allure of these creatures are exaggerated to expose the complex desires they provoke in us. The compulsive need to touch, protect, and possess becomes a fetishistic exploration of the act of caregiving itself—an impulse driven by a desire for control and affection. These "lovely animals," while depicted in tender, seductive forms, are not merely passive objects of our desire—they are active participants in the dynamic of power and dependency, questioning the boundaries between love and ownership, care and control.

Ultimately, Fetish Animals explores the eroticization of innocence and the tension between nurturing instincts and possessive desires. By combining softness with constraint, the project invites viewers to reflect on the power dynamics involved in the act of caregiving and the inherent complexities in our relationships with those we seek to protect or control. Through this lens, the work becomes a poignant critique of the fetishization of vulnerability and the contradictory nature of tenderness, exposing the uncomfortable yet undeniable truths behind the aesthetics of "cuteness" and the human desire to own what we deem innocent and malleable.
